For more than 30 years our mission has been to help alcoholics and drug addicts and people with mental illnesses by providing the tools necessary to lead a life of recovery and to become productive members of the community. Freedom House is concerned with the emotional, physical, spiritual and social needs of those we serve. Our staff provides a therapeutic atmosphere in which growth and recovery become attainable goals. Our program goals are to provide:

  • a structured, positive environment based on the 12-step recovery model, evidence based treatment / rehabilitation, and case management
  • appropriate, available and accessible treatment to recovering addicts that will enable them to become productive members of society
  • support and stabilization treatment for people with mental illnesses to help them manage their illness and fulfill life goals
  • life skills programming to help strengthen each person in our program
  • a response to community need for expanded services.

Why We Care

  • The 2007 Triangle United Way "Snapshot of the State of Health and Human Services" estimates that 84,700 people in the Triangle area abuse drugs/alcohol and more than 293,000 have a mental illness. That is, roughly one person in 20 abuses drugs or alcohol, and one in six has a mental illness.
  • Recent studies suggest that 50% of individuals with a severe mental illness are also impacted by substance abuse.
  • Statistics indicate that nearly 45,000 people in the Triangle region may be dually diagnosed.
  • There are more than 2,600 Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) arrests annually in Orange, Durham, Person and Chatham counties—averaging seven or more every day.
  • Substance abuse is directly connected with indigence, unemployment, family disease, adolescent pregnancy and school dropout, crime, chronic illness and death.
  • Substance abuse costs Orange County residents over $180 million every year, and costs Durham County residents more than $370 million.
  • Mental illness afflicts 22% of North Carolina's population and costs the state $4.7 billion each year.
  • Freedom House responds to the needs of individuals with substance abuse addiction and mental illness by providing crisis stabilization, long and short term residential programs, social setting and non-hospital medical detoxification, halfway house programs, outpatient psychiatric services and intensive outpatient programs.
